Which Abashiri Cruise Option to Book

The right booking depends on where you sleep that night and how much of the day is already planned.

If You are already in Abashiri

Buy the Aurora ticket itself for $44.23 (¥7,000) and board at Michi-no-Eki Ryuhyo Kaido Abashiri. See how the ticket works.

If You are based in Sapporo with one free day

The Aurora Icebreaker Day Trip from Sapporo carries the cruise ticket and the drift ice museum for $295, with about five hours by coach each way.

If You want a night and an onsen

The 2-Day Aurora Cruise, Asahiyama Zoo and Onsen runs on set February and March dates at $398, and the 2-Day Drift Ice Cruise and Asahiyama Zoo Tour adds Okhotsk Tower at $617.

If You want a private guide in Abashiri

The Private Abashiri Drift Ice Cruise and Culture Day gives you a van and guide for up to 6 at $2,065 per group, with the Aurora ticket and three museums included.

If You are touring eastern Hokkaido for several days

The 4-Day Red-Crowned Cranes and Drift Ice Tour includes the cruise at $975, the 4-Day Steller's Sea Eagles and Rausu Drift Ice Trip sails from Rausu instead, and the 7-Day Hokkaido Winter and Drift Ice Private Tour lists the Aurora as optional and paid separately.

Abashiri Cruise in Six Decisions

Six choices take you from an idea to a booked day on the drift ice.

  • Which booking

Already in Abashiri, the Aurora ticket itself is all you need at $44.23 (¥7,000). Based in Sapporo, the day trip at $295 carries the cruise ticket and drift ice museum entry. Want a private guide, the culture day is $2,065 per group up to 6 with the cruise included.

    PIER TICKET: $44.23 (¥7,000) ADULT

  • When to sail

The Aurora season runs January 20 to March 31. The operator names mid-February to early March as the best window for ice. Drift ice is never guaranteed, so some days run as a coastal cruise toward Notoro Cape.

SEASON: JANUARY 20 TO MARCH 31

  • How to get there

The ship leaves from Michi-no-Eki Ryuhyo Kaido Abashiri. From Sapporo the Okhotsk limited express takes 5h 25m and a bus about 6 hours. From Memanbetsu Airport the airport bus reaches Abashiri Bus Terminal in 35 minutes for $6.64 (¥1,050).

    AIRPORT BUS: 35 MINUTES

  • What it costs

The operator's own adult fare is $44.23 (¥7,000), with preschool children riding free. Tours range from a 2.5-hour e-bike ride at $63 to an 8-hour private drift ice day at $2,065 per group. Longer winter loops run 4 to 7 days.

    PRIVATE DAY: $2,065 PER GROUP

  • Who it suits

The large ship cruise takes about 1 hour with a heated cabin, so it works for most ages. Add the Abashiri Prison Museum, adults $9.48 (¥1,500). Travellers wanting more days can join a winter loop from Kushiro or Sapporo.

    CRUISE LENGTH: ABOUT 1 HOUR

  • What to bring

Outdoor decks run around -10 to 0 degrees C in February, with a normal daily high of -2.0 C. The operator advises a heavy outer layer, ear covers, a scarf and waterproof shoes. Bring binoculars or a telephoto lens for seals and Steller's sea eagles, and leave the drone at home.

    FEBRUARY LOW: -9.6 C

Buy the Aurora Ticket or Book a Tour?

If you are already in Abashiri, the Aurora operator's own ticket is all you need. A tour pays off when it carries you from Sapporo or Kushiro, or when you want a private guide on the ground.

Tours That Include the Cruise

The pick for a Sapporo base is the Aurora Icebreaker Day Trip from Sapporo at $295 per person. It covers the cruise ticket and the drift ice museum entry, with meals extra and about five hours by coach each way. If the cruise is cancelled for weather, the group visits the Abashiri Prison Museum instead and gets a partial refund.

The 2-Day Aurora Cruise, Asahiyama Zoo and Onsen by H.I.S. costs $398 per person for 2 days. The price covers the cruise, an onsen hotel night, three meals, the zoo and the prison museum, and it runs on set dates in February and early March. There is a festival venue support fee of ¥1,000 per person paid on site, and day 1 lunch is not included. If the cruise is cancelled, the group switches to the Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum.

The 2-Day Drift Ice Cruise and Asahiyama Zoo Tour costs $617 per person and covers an icebreaker cruise, an onsen hotel night, dinner, breakfast and the zoo, with lunch extra. If weather cancels the cruise, Mt Tento Observatory and the Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum replace it.

Already in Abashiri? The Private Abashiri Drift Ice Cruise and Culture Day is $2,065 per group up to 6 for 8 hours, with the Aurora ticket, three museum entries, a private van and guide included and lunch extra. If you do not accept an adjusted itinerary, a full refund is guaranteed for the affected booking.

The 4-Day Red-Crowned Cranes and Drift Ice Tour from Kushiro is $975 per person, with the Abashiri drift ice cruise, the crane centre and a museum entry included, hotels and meals extra. On days without ice the cruise still runs along the coast.

Tours Where the Cruise Is Extra or Different

The 7-Day Hokkaido Winter and Drift Ice Private Tour costs $11,142 per group up to 6 and lists the Aurora cruise as optional and paid separately, with hotels also excluded. The 4-Day Steller's Sea Eagles and Rausu Drift Ice Trip at $1,001 per person is a Rausu eagle-watching boat of about 2.5 hours, not the Abashiri icebreaker. The 2-Day Drift Ice Cruise and Asahiyama Zoo Tour includes a drift ice icebreaker cruise but does not name its ship.

The 2-Day Private Shiretoko Tour from Abashiri and the 2-Day Private Shiretoko Car Tour are private car and driver only, with cruise and admission tickets bought separately.

On Board the Aurora: Ships, Seats and Who It Suits

Two kinds of ship sail the Abashiri cruise. The large ships Aurora and Aurora 2 run the regular one-hour sailings, and the small ship Aurora 3 runs a longer offshore trip.

Large Ship or Small Ship Aurora 3?

The choice changes the price, the length and what happens on a day without ice. The figures below come from the Aurora operator's fare and FAQ pages, converted to dollars at the rate used across this site.

FeatureLarge ship (Aurora, Aurora 2)Small ship Aurora 3
Adult fare$44.23 (¥7,000)$61.93 (¥9,800)

Cruise lengthAbout 1 hourAbout 2 hours
With no drift iceSea cruise to Notoro CapeSailing cancelled

Seats, Decks and What Is On the Ship

Standard seating on the large ship is unreserved, and guests board in the order they line up at the gate. That means a reservation does not hold a seat if the ship is full, so join the queue early. The 1st-floor cabin has free seating and connects to a side deck with a close, low view of the ice. The 2nd-floor cabin holds 50 special seats at the front, sold on board on the day for $3.16 (¥500) to whoever asks first.

The ship is heated throughout, with a coffee lounge, a shop and restrooms on both floors. Most passengers still watch from the outdoor deck, where it runs around -10 to 0 degrees C. Drones are not allowed.

Families, Seasickness and Access

Preschool children ride free and elementary school children pay $22.12 (¥3,500), so a family on the large ship pays two adult fares and the child fares only. The operator says the large ship rolls little while it breaks ice, but it can sway strongly on rough sea, so take your usual remedy if you are prone to seasickness. The Aurora Icebreaker Day Trip from Sapporo lists itself as not suitable for people prone to seasickness or with mobility impairments.

For wheelchair users the large ship is the only option. Staff help at the boarding point, but the stairs inside limit where you can go. Holders of a grade 1 physical disability certificate pay 50 percent of the fare, and so does one accompanying caregiver.

Aurora or the Garinko-go III in Monbetsu?

Hokkaido's other drift ice icebreaker sails from Monbetsu, further up the Okhotsk coast. The Garinko-go III runs daily from January 15 to March 31, and each cruise lasts about 60 minutes, up to 30 minutes longer depending on the ice. If you are based in Abashiri, the Aurora is the boat on your doorstep.

The 2-Day Drift Ice Cruise and Asahiyama Zoo Tour does not name its ship, and its second day goes on to Okhotsk Tower, so check the listing before you book if the Aurora itself matters to you.

What Else to Do in Abashiri in Winter

The cruise takes about 1 hour, so the rest of the day fits the sights below, most of them on Mt Tento or along the coast.

Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum on Mt Tento

This museum on Mt Tento shows real drift ice in an indoor ice room and covers the science of the Sea of Okhotsk. Winter hours run 9:00-16:30 from November to April, with last entry at 16:00, and there are no regular closed days. Around the year end and new year, from December 29 to January 5, hours shorten to 10:00-15:00.

The address is Tentozan 244-3, Abashiri, and the phone is 0152-43-5951. Entry is included in Aurora Icebreaker Day Trip from Sapporo, Private Abashiri Drift Ice Cruise and Culture Day and 4-Day Red-Crowned Cranes and Drift Ice Tour.

Abashiri Prison Museum

An open-air museum of Meiji-era prison buildings, designated Important Cultural Properties. Admission is $9.48 (¥1,500) for adults, with high school students and younger at lower rates, and hours are 9:00-17:00 with last entry at 16:00. It is the backup stop on Aurora Icebreaker Day Trip from Sapporo: if weather cancels the cruise, the group visits here instead and receives a partial refund. 2-Day Aurora Cruise, Asahiyama Zoo and Onsen also includes entry, and day 2 lunch there is part of its meal plan.

TicketPrice
Adult$9.48 (¥1,500)
High school student$6.32 (¥1,000)
Elementary and junior high student$4.74 (¥750)

Ryuhyo Monogatari Train

JR Hokkaido runs the Ryuhyo Monogatari train between Abashiri and Shiretoko-Shari along the coast, in drift ice season. It runs on January 30-31, daily February 1-28 and March 6-7. The one-way fare is a $6.57 (¥1,040) ticket plus a $6.32 (¥1,000) reserved seat, children half price, and all cars are reserved.

Train 1 leaves Abashiri at 9:50 and reaches Shiretoko-Shari at 10:41, stopping at Kitahama for about 11 minutes, where trains 2 and 4 in the other direction stop at Hamakoshimizu for about 25 minutes. The Kitahama observation deck was removed due to age.

Museums of the Okhotsk Coast

The Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples covers the cultures of the north. It opens 9:30-16:30, and permanent exhibition admission is $3.48 (¥550) for adults and $1.26 (¥200) for high school and university students, free for junior high age and under and for people 65 or older. It sits about 5 km from JR Abashiri Station on the Tentozan bus line, next to the Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum.

The Moyoro Shell Mound Museum shows remains of the ancient Okhotsk people.

Two Abashiri days cover this ground without a cruise. Abashiri Heritage Tour by Private Vehicle visits the prison museum, the drift ice museum and the Moyoro Shell Mound, while North Okhotsk Heritage and Kayak Day includes both museums, pottery making, lunch, dinner and a sunset kayak in a 10.5-hour day.

Booking and Boarding

Book online or by phone on 0152-43-6000, open 9:00 to 18:00. Advance reservations are recommended, but you can board without one when seats are free, and you may be refused if the ship is full. Complete boarding procedures at least 20 minutes before departure, as the counter closes 5 minutes before.

Every passenger fills in a boarding list. The boarding place and ticket counter are at Michi-no-Eki Ryuhyo Kaido Abashiri, Minami 3-jo Higashi 4-chome 5-1, Abashiri. A taxi from JR Abashiri Station takes about 8 minutes and costs about $6.32 (¥1,000) one way, and direct buses run to the boarding place from Memanbetsu Airport and JR Abashiri bus terminals.

Parking at the roadside station is free, and coin lockers are on the 1st floor.

How to Get to Abashiri for the Cruise

The Aurora sails from Michi-no-Eki Ryuhyo Kaido Abashiri, about 10 minutes by car from JR Abashiri Station and about 30 minutes from Memanbetsu Airport. Here is how to reach the pier.

From Sapporo

The Okhotsk limited express is the direct train from Sapporo to Abashiri. Okhotsk no. 1 leaves Sapporo at 06:52 and reaches Abashiri at 12:17, a run of 5h 25m. Okhotsk no. 3 leaves at 15:30 and arrives at 20:52, 5h 22m. The train also stops at Memanbetsu 15 minutes before Abashiri. A bus from Sapporo takes about 6 hours.

If you would rather not arrange the trip yourself, coach tours run the route. Aurora Icebreaker Day Trip from Sapporo is one day at $295 per person with the cruise ticket and drift ice museum entry included, and about five hours of coach travel each way. The two-day options add an onsen night. 2-Day Aurora Cruise, Asahiyama Zoo and Onsen costs $398 per person and runs only on set February and early March dates. 2-Day Drift Ice Cruise and Asahiyama Zoo Tour costs $617 per person.

From Memanbetsu Airport

The Abashiri Bus airport bus runs from Memanbetsu Airport to Abashiri Bus Terminal in 35 minutes and costs $6.64 (¥1,050). JNTO notes the same bus continues about 5 more minutes to the Aurora boarding place. The bus timetable is at abashiribus.com/memanbetsu/ and the Abashiri Bus phone is 0152-43-4101.

If you land and want the museums rather than the ice, Abashiri Heritage Tour by Private Vehicle picks up at Memanbetsu Airport as well as central Abashiri hotels and JR Abashiri Station. It is a 7-hour private car day with a licensed guide and museum admission included, priced at $786.90 per person, with no cruise.

From the Station to the Pier

The boarding place and ticket counter sit at Michi-no-Eki Ryuhyo Kaido Abashiri, Minami 3-jo Higashi 4-chome 5-1, Abashiri. From JR Abashiri Station a taxi takes about 8 minutes and costs about $6.32 (¥1,000) one way. Direct buses also run to the boarding place from the Memanbetsu Airport and JR Abashiri bus terminals.

Parking at the roadside station is free, with 106 spaces listed, and coin lockers stand on the 1st floor.

The Honest Small Print

These trips suit most travellers, but a few limits are worth knowing before you pay.

  • Drift ice is a natural phenomenon and is not guaranteed on any day. With no ice, the large ship becomes a sea tour toward Notoro Cape, and if no ice is found the small ship Aurora 3 sailing is cancelled.
  • The decision to sail is usually made about 1 hour before departure, and a cancellation can still happen after check-in. The operator does not notify reservation holders, so you must check the operating status yourself.
  • The outdoor decks run around -10 to 0 degrees C and colder over the water, and most passengers watch from outside. Bring a heavy outer layer, ear covers, a scarf and waterproof shoes.
  • Some prices come later. The special seat at the front of the 2nd deck costs $3.16 (¥500) extra, paid on board, and the 2-Day Aurora Cruise, Asahiyama Zoo and Onsen has a festival venue support fee of ¥1,000 per person paid on site.
  • Wildlife is a bonus, not a promise. Seals, sea birds and Steller's sea eagles are possible sightings and none is guaranteed, so the operator suggests binoculars or a telephoto lens.
  • You can be refused boarding if the ship is full, so advance reservations are recommended. Complete boarding procedures at least 20 minutes before departure, as the counter closes 5 minutes before.
  • Check what a tour price really covers. On the 7-Day Hokkaido Winter and Drift Ice Private Tour the Aurora cruise is optional and paid separately, and hotels are excluded, while the 2-Day Aurora Cruise, Asahiyama Zoo and Onsen runs only on set February and early March dates.

Dos and Don'ts on an Abashiri Cruise

Do

  • Do check whether your tour includes the ticket, because the Aurora sells its adult ticket for $44.23 (¥7,000) and Private Abashiri Drift Ice Cruise and Culture Day includes it while 7-Day Hokkaido Winter and Drift Ice Private Tour does not.
  • Do arrive at least 20 minutes before departure to complete boarding procedures, because the counter closes 5 minutes before the ship leaves.
  • Do dress for the deck, because the outdoor decks sit around -10 to 0 degrees C and colder over the water, so wear a heavy outer layer, ear covers and a scarf.
  • Do pick a morning sailing, because the go or no-go call comes about 1 hour before departure and a cancelled morning leaves the afternoon as a backup.

Don't

  • Don't expect ice on a set day, because drift ice is a natural phenomenon, it can change within hours with wind and tide, and with no ice the large ship runs a coastal course toward Notoro Cape.
  • Don't assume the 7-day private tour includes the cruise, because on 7-Day Hokkaido Winter and Drift Ice Private Tour the Aurora cruise is optional and paid separately on top of the $11,142 per group price.
  • Don't confuse the Rausu boat with the Aurora, because 4-Day Steller's Sea Eagles and Rausu Drift Ice Trip uses an eagle-watching boat of about 2.5 hours from Rausu port, not the Abashiri icebreaker.
  • Don't book the onsen tour outside its dates, because 2-Day Aurora Cruise, Asahiyama Zoo and Onsen runs only on set February and early March dates named on the listing.

When Is the Drift Ice Season in Abashiri?

The Aurora season runs January 20 to March 31. JNTO says the ice begins a 1,000-kilometer journey from the Amur River and drifts south on winds and currents, typically reaching Abashiri from late January, with the best sightings from mid-February to early March.

What Happens With No Ice

Drift ice is a natural phenomenon and is not guaranteed on any day. The decision whether to sail is usually made about 1 hour before departure, and a cancellation can still happen after check-in. The operator does not notify reservation holders, so check the operating status yourself.

With no drift ice, the large ship becomes a sea tour to Notoro Cape. If no ice is found, the small ship Aurora 3 sailing is cancelled.

How Cold It Gets

These are the Japan Meteorological Agency normals for Abashiri. The cabin is heated, but the outdoor decks run around -10 to 0 degrees C and colder over the water. The operator advises a heavy outer layer, ear covers, a scarf and waterproof shoes, since most passengers watch from the outdoor deck.

Wildlife on the Ice

Possible sightings from the ship include seals, sea birds and Steller's sea eagles, and none is guaranteed. The operator suggests binoculars or a telephoto lens. Drones are not allowed.
